This double bill, Cavalleria rusticana and Pagliacci, consists of two classic Italian operas, rich in passion, drama, and musical brilliance.

Pagliacci introduces us to a troupe of travelling players, where emotions run high—especially for Nedda, a young woman in the company who has taken a lover. He begs her to run away with him, but when her husband discovers the affair, rage and jealousy take hold. As the evening’s performance begins, reality and theatre blur in front of a terrified audience, as the furious Canio delivers one of opera’s most chilling climaxes.

RECITAL
Leeds Song, Leeds, UK
Saturday April 18
The programme is a meditation on fascism, racism and injustice, and specifically on the innocent child victims of conflict. It also follows the search for freedom from occupation and subjugation, and puts forward a faith in the endurance of humanity in the face of war.

The title of the programme is taken from Robert Schumann’s settings of Justinus Kerner, composed in 1840. In his poetry, Kerner laments the suffering inflicted upon humans by other humans. His words resound with potency today, and they echo throughout this programme, connecting songs from seemingly disparate musical traditions into an indivisible whole.

When the great Brigitte Fassbaender invites you to her select “Eppaner Liedsommer” in South Tyrol, it can be seen as a badge of honor. Theodore Platt and Keval Shah have been accorded this honor. The “rising star amongst baritones” and the “equally prominent pianist” have also already presented their calling cards at London’s Wigmore Hall. At the Royal Opera House in Copenhagen, the baritone enjoyed great success as Mozart’s Count Almaviva and Rossini’s Figaro, and Deutsche Grammophon already has its eye on him.
