Eppaner Liedsommer
Recital
Eppan, South Tirol
September 08
It's a pleasure to be invited to perform this recital in South Tyrol off the back of winning the 1st Prize at the Hugo Wolf International Art Song Competition in 2022, and made all the more special given that the Eppaner Liedsommer is the birthchild of Brigitte Fassbaender, a long-time mentor to me.
The programme is formed of three parts, beginning with Schumann's most exquisite cycle, Liederkreis Op. 24 set to the text of Heine. Graham Johnson describes the songs as "extremes of elation and despair... mingled [with] sentimentality, self-pity and ironic self-mockery."
To follow is Ravel's Histoires naturelles, from Renart's humorous prose poems, entertaining, playful, and beautiful in equal measure.
To finish there are several songs by British composers Finzi, Gurney, and Warlock touching on themes of loss, homesickness, and revelry.
It promises to be a multi-faceted and memorable recital.

Mozart's comic opera Le nozze di Figaro receives a new, classical staging with a twist by Anne Barslev, who brings the opera's bittersweet humour to life in a labyrinthine universe reflecting life's myriad paths and misdirections.
In Mozart's brilliantly intricate comedy of confusion about love, infidelity and forgiveness, the artistic trio of Anne Barslev, Rikke Juellund and Astrid Lynge Ottosen explore the struggle of women, high and low, for bodily autonomy and a place within the system.

Beethoven's 9th Symphany
Concert
Großes Festspielhaus, Salzburg
December 18, 19, 20
Ludwig van Beethoven's 9th Symphony is simply "the Ninth". In its length and with a vocal cantata based on Schiller's "Ode to Joy" as the finale, it was a visionary work. It was heavily used by terrorist regimes in the 20th century, which would certainly not have pleased its composer. What remains is a magnificent symphonic soundscape and the humane, currently very topical message of a dreamed-of ideal world in which people can live peacefully as brothers and sisters.
This monumental work will be performed before Christmas and the New Year with the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg, a prominent vocal ensemble and the Salzburg Bach Choir. Roberto González-Monjas, the orchestra's new chief conductor, is a musician with a big heart and a masterful command of his craft, guaranteeing an interpretation that is as timeless as it is contemporary. May "Freude, schöner Götterfunken" light up the darkness of the present.

Role: Lord Cecil
The vocals command the spotlight in this majestic drama centred on passion, power and murder.
Maria Stuarda presents a fierce and virtuosic vocal duel between two divas vying for the love of the same man, epitomising bel canto at its finest. The Queen of England finds no peace until the head of her Scottish rival is severed from her body.
Maria Stuarda shines as a dazzling gem in Donizetti's collection of operas about the Tudor period in England. Based on Friedrich Schiller's drama Maria Stuart, the opera intertwines historical events and a fictional confrontation between two equally formidable women: The Protestant Queen Elizabeth I and her Catholic cousin, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots.

Role: Figaro
An electrifying cinematic adaptation of Rossini's classic about a quick-witted barber.
Reumert Award-winning director Martin Lyngbo has masterfully orchestrated a critically acclaimed interpretation of Rossini's comedic opera Il barbiere di Siviglia, inspired by silent movies. This rendition serves as an ideal entry point for anyone embarking on their opera journey.
The tale of the cunning Figaro serves as a precursor to Mozart’s equally comedic and whimsical plot in Le nozze di Figaro. In Rossini's opera, the shrewd barber has not yet met his future beloved, Susanna. Instead, he assists his lovestruck friend, Count Almaviva, in liberating the coveted Rosina from the clutches of her avaricious guardian, Don Bartolo.
